The Battle of Mount Chegar is one of the most famous and important battles of the First Serbian Uprising, which took place on May 31, 1809, on Mount Chegar, near the village of Kamenica, near Niesh. The Serbian army was moving in the direction of Nisha, but near the city refused its assault and took up positions on Mount Chegar. In the ensuing fierce battle with the Turkish army, the advance Serbian unit under the command of Stefan Sinjelic suffered heavy losses. At the end of the battle, Sinjelic, in order not to get alive in captivity, shot in the powder cellar. The skulls of the dead Serbs were buried in the walls of the tower known as Cele Kula. On the mountain Chegar was later erected a monument to Sinjelic and his fallen soldiers.
