MINES – PLAQUE IN THE NICHE

In 1999, NATO aircraft began bombing the territory of the Republic of Yugoslavia. During 78 days of NATO aggression, air strikes killed more than 3.5 thousand people and destroyed dozens and hundreds of civilian targets.

As early as the end of 1999, the country began to return the land filled with explosives to industrial and agricultural circulation.

In 2008, Serbia asked Russia for assistance in the field of humanitarian demining and the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation concluded an agreement with the Serbian Interior Ministry on the Humanitarian Demining Program, and the Russian detachment began to clean up the territory of Serbia.

In 2009-2011, the Russian detachment, in coordination with the Center for Demining of the Republic of Serbia (CDC), cleared the vicinity of the town of Parachin, heavily clogged with explosive objects.

On December 27, 2018, on the 10th anniversary of the completion of the clean-up of the airport and its surroundings from explosive objects, a memorial plaque was unveiled in the lobby of the Konstantin the Great airport in Nisha. It was a sign of gratitude to the residents of Nish to the "Russian brothers" – members of the Russian-Serbian humanitarian demining unit, who liberated the airfield and surrounding land from the deadly cargo.

The event was organized on the initiative of the administration of Nish and the RSGC. Russian veterans who participated in the demining of the airport were invited to participate in the ceremony. Among the numerous guests are representatives of city organizations and structures, employees of the Russian Embassy.

The director of the RSGK V.P. Gulevich, who opened a commemorative plaque with the mayor of Nish Bulatovich said: "…Residents of Nish respect historical events, the participants of which were Russians and Serbs, trying to celebrate it and bring it to the next generations.

And today the airport of the city of Nisha meets all the arriving plaque, a reminder of the historical friendship of the brotherly Slavic peoples …

It is also significant that this anniversary coincided with the day of the rescuer celebrated in Russia …"
